ISBN / Legal Deposit
An ISBN is a unique 13-digit identification number assigned to new publications. It is used by shops and libraries to order books. There is no legal requirement for an ISBN and it conveys no form of legal or copyright protection. It is however a product number and the majority of larger retail outlets and Internet bookstores will not stock a publication unless it has been given an ISBN. The UK International Standard Book Numbering Agency allocates the numbers however there is a small fee entailed. ISBNs are only available in blocks. The smallest block is 10 numbers. A new number is needed for a new or revised edition and hardback and paperback books have different numbers. An ISBN should be applied for from the ISBN Agency as soon as the book's title is decided upon.

Barcodes
The barcode of a book corresponds to its ISBN, and is essential if a book is to be sold by a bookseller. Most printers will be able to generate a barcode from the ISBN.
Cataloguing in Publication (CIP)
A form may be obtained from Bibliographic Data Services Limited approximately 3 months prior to publication. The cataloguing information will appear in the British National Bibliography (BNB). Many libraries and booksellers use the BNB as an aid to stock selection.

In addition, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the National Library of Scotland, the Library of Trinity College Dublin and the National Library of Wales have the right to request one copy each; these can be supplied via the Libraries Copyright Agency in London.
Publishers in Northern Ireland are also requested to donate two copies of each publication to Northern Ireland Publications Resource (NIPR). These can be sent to either Belfast Central Library or the Linen Hall Library, marked for the attention of NIPR.

Funding Sources
Before you undertake any publishing venture you must consider the high costs entailed. If you decide to try for external funding to help you with production costs, you should bear in mind that getting financial backing for any Northern Ireland publication is very difficult as there are only a limited number of grants available and competition for these are high. In addition, the application procedures can be quite time-consuming, so you need to factor that into your schedule. Here is a list of possible funding sources.
Local Councils
At present local administration in Northern Ireland is carried out through 26 local councils (although this may change in the near future). Each council is keen to promote culture and arts in their own area and the majority have employed dedicated Arts Officers to ensure this happens. Many but not all councils offer small grants to publishers who are producing publications about the culture or heritage of the local district. To find out if your council offers any such funding schemes you should contact the local Arts Officer.
